Newark Police Taking Part in 'Medicine Drop'

Department will dispose of unwanted prescription drugs to prevent abuse

The Newark Police Department has partnered with the state Attorney General's Office and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs in an effort to combat the abuse of prescription drugs.

The purpose of “Project Medicine Drop” is to fight the abuse and illegal dealing of prescription drugs. Project Medicine Drop allows the public to anonymously deposit their unused or expired household pharmaceutical medication 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This opportunity prevents unused medication from falling into the hands of those who may abuse and also provides a safe procedure for disposing unused medication.

The public will be allowed to dispose of their unused or expired medication into a Project Medicine Drop Box, which will be located at the Newark Police Department Facility at 22 Franklin St. The box debuted on Saturday.

The following different forms of medication will be accepted for disposal: pills, capsules, patches, unused/expired medication and pet medications.  Please note that syringes and all forms of liquid medication will NOT be accepted.

“The Newark Police Department continues to uphold their commitment to public safety by participating in Project Medicine Drop.  This program provides the community with an avenue to properly dispose of medication that can fall into the hands of unintended users which usually leads to drug addiction or death,” said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
