Off-Duty Corrections Officer Shoots Two

Officials say shooting occurred during a robbery attempt.

An off-duty corrections officer shot and critically wounded two men early Monday during what authorities said appeared to be a robbery attempt.

The officer, whose name was not released, was leaving his car at Pomona Avenue and Bergen Street around 3 am when he was approached by three armed men, said Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ambrose said the suspects shot at the officer, who returned fire, wounding two of them. They were being treated at University Hospital Monday.

This is the second time in little more than a week there has been a shooting involving a member of law enforcement in the city. On July 20, Newark police shot and wounded a car theft suspect who reportedly was trying to run them over.
