Officials Release Names of Victims Slain in Tuesday Shooting

Five people shot in daytime shooting

Authorities Wednesday released the names of the two people shot and killed in Newark yesterday.

Akbar Muhammad, 36 and the son of a prominent Newark imam, was behind the wheel of a car when the shooter approached at 11:30 am. He was pronounced dead at the scene about half an hour later.

Also in the car was Shante Spivey, a 28-year-old East Orange resident, who was pronounced dead at University Hospital around 11:40 am., the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Three more people also in the car were also shot, but survived. They are a 34-year-old woman and two men, aged 18 and 35.
