An East Orange real estate agent was arrested Tuesday for allegedly scamming a Newark woman in a 2011 foreclosure scheme, authorities said.
Sylvia Sexius, 46, of Orange, is accused of completing a fraudulent mortgage on a property at 520-524 Prospect St. in East Orange by sending the Newark woman foreclosure notices on the property. The woman, who was not identified, reported to Newark police that she did not own the property and had no knowledge of it.
Sexius allegedly obtained the $412,000 mortgage by using personal information she had gotten through previously performing a refinance of the Newark woman's home.
Following the closing, Sexius began to operate her real estate business out of the Prospect Street residence and obtained rental income from commercial and residential units within the same building.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray commended Det. Aloma Wright, of the Newark Police Department, and Det. Jeffery Baker, of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, with the successful investigation of the scheme.
Sexius was arrested by ECPO's Financial Crimes Unit and charged with second degree theft by deception, fourth degree forgery and third degree theft by unlawful taking.
