Pedestrian Killed in Police Chase Last Week

A 32-year-old Upper Montclair man was killed in Newark Nov. 10 after he was struck by a fleeing car during a police chase, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police confirmed Thursday.

State Police tried to stop Alqamar Anderson, 35, of Newark, as he was driving on Route 280 around 10 pm after he was observed committing a number of moving violations, said Sgt. Adam Grossman, a State Police spokesman.

Anderson was chased into Newark, where he rammed an ambulance with his 2002 Lincoln Continental before hitting Shegan Rubin as he walked near Central Avenue and Norfolk Street. Anderson, who sustained minor injuries, was arrested at the scene. Rubin died a short time later.

Anderson faces several charges, including vehicular homicide, eluding, being involved in a fatal crash while having a suspended license and two counts of assault by auto, Grossman said. He was being held in Essex County Jail on $500,000 bail with no 10 percent cash option.

Rubin worked at the Hunger Construction food truck in Montclair, The Star-Ledger reported.
