Police Arrest Man Wanted for Aug. 20 Murder

Burrows taken into custody early Thursday

An “intense” investigation involving Newark police, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the US Marshals Service resulted in the arrest early Thursday of a city man wanted for an Aug. 20 murder, the ECPO and Newark police announced in a statement.

Anthony Burrows, 24, was taken into custody by the Fugitive Apprehension Section of the Newark Police Department shortly before 8 am at a home on Abbotsford Avenue.

Burrows was wanted for the murder of another city man, 24-year-old Russell Lighten, who was fatally shot while on the 400 block of S. 17th Street. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 9:35 pm.

"The Fugitive Apprehension Section has routinely worked closely with various law enforcement agencies and investigative units within the department to track and apprehend some of our area’s most dangerous and violent criminals. Today's arrest with the assistance of the US Marshals Service was the result of an intense investigation conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force,” said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
