Police: Bank Robber Caught While Trying to Flee In Cab

Arrest made less than a half-hour after bank was hit

Newark police arrested a 60-year-old bank robber Friday who tried to escape in a taxi, a department spokesman said in a statement.

Willie Chestnut of Newark allegedly walked into the Investors Savings Bank branch at 36 Ferry St. around 10 am and handed a teller a note demanding cash, police said. After getting the cash, Chestnut went outside and reportedly hailed a cab. Minutes later, police stopped the taxi at Elizabeth Avenue and Pioneer Street, arrested Chestnut and recovered the stolen cash, the department said.
