Prosecutor: NPD Officer Shoots Carjacker

Matter Under Investigation; Second Suspect at Large

An off-duty Newark police officer shot a man after an attempted carjacking around 5 a.m. Saturday, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The police officer, whose name was not released, was in civilian clothes and in his personal car on 17 Avenue A when he was approached by two men, one of whom pointed a gun at the officer and demanded the car, the ECPO stated. The police officer reached for his own weapon and fired. The suspects fled in a second car and crashed into a parked car a short distance away on Emmet Street. One of the suspects was found with a gunshot wound and taken to University Hospital. The other suspect is still at large.

The officer involved in the shooting was also taken to a hospital.

A spokesman declined to release additional information about the shooting, which is under investigation by the ECPO Homicide Task Force - Professional Standards Bureau, and the Newark Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau.

In September, another off-duty Newark police officer shot a suspected carjacker near Charlton Street.
