Find Out How Police Use Data to Combat Crime

Public invited to police COMPSTAT talk Monday night.

Acting Council President Anibal Ramos is inviting citizens interested in public safety in Forest Hill to a COMPSTAT presentation by Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.

The presentation will take place Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 311 Washington St.

COMPSTAT is a computerized tool used by the Newark Police Department to deploy crime-fighting resources to crime hotspots. COMPSTAT meetings are generally held weekly with police officers, but have never before been open to the public. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions.

“I felt it was important to our constituents in the North Ward to hear how our police department is proactively engaged in crime fighting,” Ramos said. “We won’t give away any of the police department’s tactics, but residents will come away from this meeting with a better understanding of how and why our police resources are allocated. This is something that I hope to do throughout every ward in the city.”

The public is invited to attend the meeting, but seating is limited, so those interested must reserve a seat in advance. Call Ramos’ office at (973) 733-5136 or email rodriguezli@ci.newark.nj.us.
