Sharpe James Robbed of Gold Chain on Newark Street

Son says former mayor uninjured as teen yanks jewelry from his neck.

Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James had a gold chain snatched from his neck by a teenager Thursday, Nj.com reported.

James, 77, was standing on the 1100 block of Bergen Street when the teen approached from behind and yanked the jewelry.

“It happened so quick – the kid came up from behind,” James’ son John Sharpe James said. “He thought someone was joking with him.”

The report says two police officials confirmed the account and one official said the former mayor was put in a choke-hold.

James, who served as the city’s mayor from 1986 to 2006, was uninjured, his son also told the website.

What in the world is these cities becoming, so in other words, before you leave out for the day, you have to leave all your valuables at home. I grew up in Newark and in the 70s Malcolm X Shabazz said to survive by Any Means Necessary, but this day and time is SCAREY and Crazy....Its not safe to be out day or night.!!!!

Hey all - just a reminder that it's OK to be passionate and forceful in your opinions, that's what we're all about here. But please - no cursing! We had to reject some comments because of four-letter words. Thanks!
