Sheriff's Officers Make North Ward Gun, Drug Arrests

An illegally parked Mercedes led to one of the arrests Wednesday

Two men face weapons and narcotics charges after being arrested in the North Ward Wednesday night, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Newark resident Jayson Carillo, 31, was arrested after double-parking his Mercedes Benz near Branch Brook Park around 8 pm. When patrolling sheriff’s officers approached the car, they reportedly noticed the smell of burnt marijuana when Carillo rolled down the window. Officers also found $10,000 and 447 decks of heroin in a bag on one of the car’s seats, the sheriff’s office said. Carillo was arrested and charged with several narcotics violations, including possession within 1,000 feet of a school and possession with intent to distribute.

Earlier that night, officers, acting on information that the driver of a Ford Taurus was committing robberies near Clifton Avenue and Third Street, stopped George Colon, a 19-year-old Kearney resident. Colon was arrested after sheriff’s officers allegedly spotted a loaded .38-caliber handgun sticking out of a center console. There was also a small amount of marijuana in the car, the sheriff’s office said.
