Six Dead in Newark House Fire

Four adults, a teenager and a child were killed in the early-morning blaze Sunday in the city's South Ward.

Six people—four adults, a teenager and a child—were killed in a fast-moving house fire early Sunday morning in Newark's South Ward.

The fire began shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of South 15th Street. Flames were "already shooting through the window" when crews arrived on the scene, Capt. John Brown, a spokesman for the Newark Fire Department, told The Star-Ledger.

Stephan Sydney, 15, and his mother, Noreen Johnson, were visiting from Georgia to honor Sydney's father, Desmond Sydney Jr., who was killed in an accident two years ago, according to The Star-Ledger.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
