Teen Charged in Midday Carjacking Wednesday

Suspect faces assault, weapons charges

A 17-year-old city youth was arrested Wednesday afternoon shortly after forcing a woman from her car and attempting to flee from police, the Newark Police Department said in a statement.

The victim, a 37-year-old Newark resident, was near 58 Hawkins St. when the teen approached and motioned as though he had a weapon. Police chased the vehicle until the suspect abandoned it and fled on foot. He was captured at 14th Avenue and S. 10th Street.

He was charged with carjacking, eluding, resisting arrest, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and weapons charges stemming from his use of the car.
