Third Teen Charged with Deli Owner's Murder

A third youth was arrested Monday in connection with the murder of Joseph Flagg, who was shot and killed during a robbery at his Chancellor Avenue deli Oct. 27.


Two 17-year-old Newark residents were arrested Friday and charged with the murder of Flagg, 41, of Union, who was known for giving ex-offenders employment and for helping local youth.


The youth, a 16-year-old Newark resident, was charged with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy and weapons offenses, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The prosecutor’s office is seeking to try all three youths as adults. They were being held at the Essex County Youth Detention Facility Monday.
