Two Arrested on Gun, Drug Charges Monday Night

One man taken into custody during cab ride

Two city men were arrested Monday night in separate incidents on narcotics and weapons charges, Newark police spokesman Sgt. Ronald Glover said.

Officers with the Gang and Narcotics Unit pulled over a taxi on Chancellor Avenue after the driver committed a motor vehicle violation. The cab’s passenger, Haneef Sanders, was seen trying to hide a loaded .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, Glover said. After he was taken into custody, officers also allegedly found him in possession of several bags of cocaine and heroin.

The second arrest occurred in the 200 block of North 5th Street when officers, while on patrol, observed 24 year-old Newark resident Kwasi Mack remove a Ruger 9mm handgun from his waistband and drop it to the ground, Glover said. Further investigation revealed Mack to be a convicted felon who was being monitored by an electronic bracelet at the time of this incident.  Mack is charged with several offenses, including resisting arrest.
