Two Dead in Targeted Attacks 10 Minutes Apart, Prosecutor Says

Ebony Martin, 24, stabbed to death and Anthony Smith, 43, fatally shot in separate incidents Saturday afternoon.

Two people were the killed in what authorities are calling targeted attacks about 10 minutes apart Saturday afternoon, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Ebony Martin, 24, of Newark, and an unidentified female were stabbed outside 25 Parkhurst St. at about 2:40 p.m., the prosecutor's office said. The victims were transported to University Hospital where Martin was pronounced dead, the prosecutor's office said. The second victim was treated and released.

About 10 minutes after the stabbing, Anthony Smith, 43, of Newark, was shot multiple times at 258b Irvine Turner Blvd. at about 2:50 p.m., the prosecutor's office said. Smith was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 3:15 p.m., the prosecutor's office said.

The prosecutor's office said the "victims appeared to have been targeted." The motives will not be released during the ongoing investigation, the prosecutor's office said.
