UPDATE: Pair of Murder Victims Identified

Two others suffer non-lethal gunshot wounds

UPDATE, 1:02 pm Nov. 19 - The Essex County Prosector's Office has identified the two Newark men shot and killed a little more than an hour apart Monday night. 

 Rahmel Johnson, 20, was shot once at 5:34 pm near 62 Broome Street and pronounced dead at the scene less than a half-hour later. Tariq Romane, 21, was shot around 7:22 pm on N. 6th Street between Dickerson and Sussex streets. He was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds at University Hospital less than 20 minutes later. 

“At this stage of the investigation it appears the two shootings are unrelated,’’ said Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Two people were shot and killed early Monday evening, the city’s 91st and 92nd homicides of the year, NJ.com reported.

A 20-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was shot on Broome Street around 6 pm, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office told NJ.com. A second person was killed around 7:30 pm on N. 6th Street.


In addition, two other people with gunshot wounds arrived at Newark Beth Israel Hospital last night. It was unclear if those victims were involved in the fatal shootings.


Also last night, a Newark police officer and three civilians were hurt in a traffic accident at Broad and West Kinney streets. The police officer was responding to the Broome Street murder scene, NJ.com reported.
