Baraka Elected Newark's Next Mayor

Councilman earned nearly 54 percent of the vote to defeat Shavar Jeffries in Tuesday's election.

City Councilman Ras Baraka was elected Newark's next mayor in Tuesday's non-partisan election.

Baraka earned 53.73 percent of the votes (23,416) compared to Shavar Jeffries' 46.03 percent (20,062).

There will need to be two run-off elections on June 10 for council seats in the Central and West wards.

Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif will face Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins in a runoff election after neither candidate secured 50 percent of the vote.

Patricia J. Bradford and Joseph A. McCallum Jr. will also have a run-off in the West Ward.

Incumbent Councilman Anibal Ramos won a third term on the council in the North Ward, beating Luis Lopez.

John Sharpe James, son of former mayor Sharpe James, defeated Brian Logan in the South Ward.

Augusto Amador won a fifth term on the council, beating Jonathan Seabra, Luis Correia and Omar Nieves in the East Ward.

Mildred Crump, Carlos Gonzalez and Mayor Luis Quintana each won re-election for at-large council seats. Eddie Osborne also earned an at-large council seat.
