Booker 'Disappointed' by Christie Gay Marriage Veto

Mayor Issues Statement Quoting MLK

Mayor Cory Booker issued a statement tonight regarding Gov. Chris Christie’s “disappointing” decision to conditionally veto a bill passed by the Legislature yesterday that would have legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey.

“As Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said, ‘the arc of the universe is long but it bends towards justice.’ Despite the Governor’s disappointing veto, I remain encouraged that one day soon all New Jersey residents will be able to enjoy equal rights, privileges and justice.  Let us all who believe in equality continue to labor in this cause,” Booker said in a statement emailed to area media outlets.

Booker, one of the state’s most prominent Democrats, and Christie, New Jersey’s top Republican, often find common ground on issues and are generally cordial even when they disagree. Last week, the two commended each other during the groundbreaking for Teacher’s Village, a Halsey Street retail-residential development.
