Mayor Cory Booker filed his campign for US Senate with the Federal Election Commission Tuesday, according to FEC records.
The filing contained little information about Booker’s campaign for the 2014 race except the name of his treasurer, Judith Zamore, who also worked on the successful 2006 campaign of Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
The filing represents Booker’s first official step to claim the seat now held by fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg, who has not said whether he will run again. Lautenberg will be 90 years old when his latest term is up in 2014. Booker’s third term as mayor also ends that year.
For months Booker had said he was considering a run either for Senate or governor. Last month, Booker publicly ruled out a campaign for governor but also stopped short of officially declaring a Senate bid, saying he was merely exploring the possibility.
