Essex Assemblyman Proposes Lowering Turnpike Tolls During Pulaski Closure

No major delays reported Monday at the Hudson River crossings on the first weekday of the two-year project.

Essex County Assemblyman Joseph Cryan has proposed lowering New Jersey Turnpike tolls to entice more commuters to use that route during the Pulaski Skyway closure.

"The DOT, which has done a job of rerouting traffic, is dependent on sending a lot of that traffic over to the New Jersey Turnpike, where anyone’s who's been on turnpike knows that those tolls are expensive," Cryan told My9NJ.com. "The idea is to cut the tolls in half during the period of the Pulaski Skyway repairs which is about two years."

There were no major delays reported Monday—the first weekday since the northbound Pulaski lanes were closed Saturday—at the Hudson River crossings, according to NJ.com.

The $1 billion project to rehabilitate the 3.5-mile bridge connecting Newark with Jersey City will keep the northbound lanes closed for the next two years. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has suggested several alternate routes.
