Help for Small Businesses, Newark's Own Pro Basketball Team

The week ahead on Newark Patch.

Lots to talk about on Newark Patch this week!

We’ll be writing about the Jersey Express, an ABA-league basketball team based right here in Newark. Along with their community outreach -- they’ll be hosting clinics and a charity game -- the team is also remarkable for another reason: it’s the first male professional sports franchise owned by an African-American woman.

PSEG is renewing its commitment to renewable energy -- by installing the infrastructure needed for eco-friendly cars.

We’ll also be reporting on what happened when a bunch of computer whizzes were let loose to work on a project affecting the lives of every Newarker.

Also this week, the city unveils its Mobile Emergency Operations Center, a vehicle designed to be virtually disaster proof and to be used during manmade and natural emergencies, like last year’s Superstorm Sandy.

And more -- the city is announcing the start of a program to aid small businesses in Newark with so-called “crowdfunded” loans. Tell your entrepreneur friends to check it out.

This week also marks the start of the junior public safety academy, a kind of mini-camp where Newark schoolchildren get an up-close, hands-on look at the work done by the city police and fire departments, as well as the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
