Report: Rice May Run for Mayor in 2014

West Ward Councilman had run unsuccessfully for Congress

West Ward Councilman Ron Rice is mulling a run for mayor of the city of Newark, PolitickerNJ  reported Tuesday.

Quoting two unnamed sources, PolitickerNJ said Rice, , has privately expressed interest in the top job at city hall.

Other possible mayoral candidates have been somewhat less coy about their intentions.

Mayor Cory Booker, now in his second term, when his current term expires in 2014, and is instead eyeing a US Senate seat or a shot at Gov. Chris Christie’s job.

Rice’s council colleague, Ras Baraka of the South Ward, announced during a meeting of the Newark Municipal Council in March

Baraka in his race for Congress this year.

Rice did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
