Ironbound-Area Student Recognized At Freeholders Youth Event

The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders commended Catherine Sousa of Science Park High School for her academic and athletic prowess.

Anyone who ever doubted that women could play with the best of them in math, science and sports better sit down. Catherine Sousa, a 17-year-old senior at Science Park High School, has got it covered.

The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Ironbound-area student at its 11th Annual Essex County Celebrates Youth Awards for her stellar academic and athletic achievements.

Sousa is treasurer at the National Honor Society and a competitor in the Calculus Olympics, the Statistics Olympics, the Newark Math League and the Science Park Robotics Team.

She is also captain of the school's varsity soccer team and a player on the varsity volleyball team.

“When I first met Catherine, I asked her to give me three words to describe her character," said Freeholder Rolando Bobadilla, who presented her with the commendation. “...She said ‘persistent,’ ‘hard-working’ and ‘always willing to help others’, and I can’t think of any finer qualities than those.”

Sousa plans to double major in mathematics and computer science when she attends the New Jersey Institute of Technology in fall.
