Link School Hosts Essay Contest on Emancipation Proclamation

Link Community School has announced the winners of its first annual essay contest for 6th grade students in Newark and the surrounding area. The winners were First Place - Jai Miller, Heywood Avenue School in Orange; Second Place - KyAsisa Mays, Great Oaks Charter School in Newark; and Third Place – Latasia Anderson, Merit Prep Charter School in Newark. They won, respectively, an Acer C7 Chromebook, a Kindle Fire, and a gift card.
 
Sixty students from several elementary schools entered the contest, writing on the theme of social justice in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. They were to identify an injustice, inequality or unfair treatment affecting their community and propose solutions to address it. All contest entrants received certificates of participation for their efforts at a celebration at Link last night.
 
Link’s Head of School Maria Pilar Paradiso expressed appreciation to the contestants, saying, “The essays were thoughtful and well written, clearly expressing issues which face our communities daily.  It is refreshing and encouraging that the contestants, at their age, are so concerned about social injustice, the precept on which Link was founded in 1969 by the Sisters of St. Dominic,  and so eager to find ways to alleviate it.”
