Former school board candidate Ariagna Perello appointed to seat on nine-member board

Ariagna Perello has been appointed to Newark Schools Advisory Board, which voted Saturday to fill the vacancy after Shanique Speight's recent resignation.

The advisory board voted 6-0, with two members absent, to appoint Perello, who will fill the seat until the next school board election in April 2013.

After a second run for school board in April, Perello was beat out of a spot on the nine-member board by nearly 90 votes. Perello ran on the "Children First Team," along with Marques Aquil-Lewis and DeNiqua Matias, who were both were elected.

Speight resigned from the school board after her contentious appointment to the Newark City Council last month.

"The advisory board welcomes Ms. Perello and is proud to quickly shift focus back to the challenge inherent in the district’s mission to educate the students in the Newark Public Schools to be successful in meeting the challenges of their generation," the board said in a statement.
