Newark Schools Jazz Festival

Event is on Saturday

All are invited to the 2012 Newark Public Schools Student Jazz Festival on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Science Park High School, 260 Norfolk Street, according to a press release from the city school administration.

The festival will feature nine groups including kids who take part in the Jazz House Kids (JHK) program, which offers musical and educational programs to kids, teachers, parents, and other adults.

"Internationally-renowned jazz performers teach alongside JHK professional staff, offering students a wide range of creative programming that develops musical potential, enhances leadership skills, and strengthens academic performance," according to a press release from the school administration. "Grammy-winning Christian McBride recently led a workshop at Oliver Street School, whose jazz band is performing at the festival."

Justin Charles and Rashaan Pickett, part of the Jazz House Big Band, garnered nine awards at the 2012 Charles Mingus Competition for High Schools in New York City. They are both from Arts High School and will be performing.

Other festival participants will be students from the Arts High School Jazz Ensemble, Science Park High School Honors Choir, Technology High School Jazz Combo, University High School Jazz Band and West Side High School Choir.
 
The Fourteenth Avenue School Chorus, Maple Avenue School Jazz Band, Oliver Street School Jazz Band and Peshine Avenue School Band will be representing Newark elementary schools at the performance.
