Robert Treat Wins Charter School Basketball Championship

Girls team clinched title March 12

The Robert Treat Academy Charter School girl’s basketball team recently won the Charter School Athletic League championships, defeating St. Philips Academy 20-18 in the final game.

Principal Theresa Adubato said winning the League championships brought a new sense of pride to the K-8 school.

“For the first time, our students have been recognized and honored beyond academic achievements,” Adubato said. “Our girls are model Robert Treat students and are a source of inspiration and motivation for the entire student body and staff.”

The Charter School Athletic League Middle School Girl’s division is comprised of teams from 11 charter schools and two private schools mostly drawn from Newark. The championship game was played on March 12 before a crowd of more than 100 enthusiastic parents and friends at New Community Recreation Center in Newark.

Comprised of 12 girls, the team was coached by Dawn Geronimo, who was a basketball standout at Nyack High School in New York and the University of North Carolina, where she played at the same time Michael Jordan starred on the men’s team. Robert Treat’s physical education teacher, Josh Ontel, served as assistant coach.

Stephen N. Adubato, the founder of The North Ward Center and Robert Treat Academy, noted that the championship title came to the school the day after it was named a “Reward School” by the state Department of Education. Robert Treat is the only charter school in the state to be given the honor. Robert Treat was awarded a Blue Ribbon for academic excellence by the U.S. Department of Education in 2008.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our scholar athletes,” Adubato said.
