County Offering Free Sports Camps for Youth

Training in life skills as well as football, basketball, soccer available

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Academics in Motion invite boys and girls entering 3rd to 8th grades to participate in the Fundamentals & Life Skills Sports Camps. The sports camps are being offered free of charge and provide children with the opportunity will combine football and basketball practice with team building and life skills instruction.

Camps are free. Student athletes who participate should wear sneakers and gym clothing, and bring water bottles for breaks.
 
Three sessions of the Fundamentals & Life Skills Sports Camp are being offered. The camp has sessions for football and basketball. Students can participate in multiple sessions. They are as follows:
 

Session 1 – Basketball Camp will be held Monday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 17 from 9 am to 1 pm in Essex County Irvington Park, located at the intersection of Grove Street and Lyons Avenue in Irvington. A maximum of 50 athletes will be able to participate.
 

Session 2 – Football Camp will be held Monday, July 30 to Friday, Aug/  2 from 9 am to 1 pm in Essex County Irvington Park, located at the intersection of Grove Street and Lyons Avenue in Irvington. A maximum of 75 athletes will be able to participate.
 
Session 3 – Basketball Camp will be held Monday, Aug.  6 to Thursday, Aug. 9 from 9 am to 1 pm in Essex County Watsessing Park at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Dodd Street in East Orange. A maximum of 50 athletes will be able to participate.
 
The football and basketball programs include stretching and agility workouts, offensive and defensive training with high school coaches, and simulated games. Life skills instruction will include discussions about time management, gang prevention, study skills, character development and etiquette. Guest speakers will visit the camp to talk with and give encouragement to the players. Daily and weekly awards will be presented to players who work hard and show the most improvement.
 
 
“The Fundamentals & Life Skills Sports Camp is a great opportunity to provide a productive and enjoyable summer activity for our children. Combining football and basketball skills and life training is an effective way to reach our young children and help them succeed,” DiVincenzo said.

The sports camp is being organized by Gerhard Sanchez, Coordinator of the Academics in Motion Program in New Jersey and Irvington High School Athletic Director.
