Newark Bears Out of Business, Selling Everything

Financial woes are forcing the owners of Riverfront Stadium to sell off everything but the stadium.

Newark’s minor league baseball team is shutting its doors for good and selling off everything inside.

After 5 years the Bears couldn’t drum up enough interest to keep its finances in order—games at the new Newark stadium averaged some 500 fans per night, according to one account. The team needed at least quadruple that average last year to keep the business viable, writes CBS Sports.

Bears officials will be hosting a liquidation auction at Riverfront Stadium on Saturday morning, the website reports.

The City of Newark and Essex County are on the hook for the costs of the stadium, however, through 2029.

Until then, college, high school, little league games and other events may take place in the ballpark.
