Petke Named Red Bulls Coach Thursday

Longtime player had been interim coach

Mike Petke, a fan favorite who holds the record for most games played as a member of the MLS MetroStars/Red Bulls, was named head coach of the team, The Daily News reported.

Petke, who will be the club’s 14th head coach, has briefly served as interim head coach before being named to the job on a permanent basis Thursday.

"The one thing we'll do is fight from first whistle to last whistle and fight for each other," Petke told The Daily News. "It's going to trickle down to the players. These guys are hungry and willing to get behind me."

The Red Bulls announced in November that the contract for the previous coach, Hans Backe, would not be extended after it expired at the beginning of the year. Petke, a New York native, had served as interim coach since Backe’s departure from the franchise.
