It's officially summer in the city.
Hundreds flocked to Essex County Riverfront Park Thursday afternoon to launch Newark's annual "Super Summer," a celebration of sun, fun and family. There was something for all ages at the three-hour event, with rock-climbing, line-dancing, painting and plenty of giveaways.
Returning to his Newark roots, actor JD Williams, who played Preston "Bodie" Broadus on the hit HBO series "The Wire," helped raffle off bicycles after expressing pride for his native city. Williams grew up on Grafton Avenue in Newark's North Ward.
"We're looking beautiful," said Williams about the community coming together for the
State-of-the-art robots from Newark Police and Fire Departments roamed the plush green fields, while the city's fire boat provided a patriotic performance, shooting red, white and blue streams of water high into the sky from the Passaic River.
The Northern New Jersey chapter of the National Organization of Professional Organizers doled out 300 pairs of brand new Crocs to young Newarkers, who were individually fitted for their new rubber soles before being sent on their way.
