Claudio Reyna Foundation Hosting 5K Sunday

Event will raise funds for youth soccer charity

The Claudio Reyna Foundation is hosting its first annual Reyna Run Sunday, Sept 16, beginning at 9:30 am.

Proceeds from the event benefit the foundation, which provides soccer instruction for youth in New Jersey and New York as a way to fight poverty, promote the sport and combat the childhood obesity epidemic.

The event, a 5K Race/Walk, begins at St. Benedict’s Prep, 520 Martin Luther King Blvd., and ends at the Red Bulls Arena in Harrison.

Participants can park at Red Bull Arena, River Bend Drive, and can take a shuttle to St. Benedict’s at 7:45, 8:15 and 8:45 am.

The 5K run starts at 9:30 am, a 1-mile fun walk begins at 9:50 am, and a “Kids Mad Dash” will be held at the arena at 10:30 am.

Reyna, a St. Benedict’s alumni,  played professionally for 12 years for six different teams: Bayer Leverkusen, VFL Wolfsburg, Glasgow Rangers, Sunderland FC, Manchester City FC, and the New York Red Bulls.  He represented the United States National team in four World Cups from 1994 through 2006, serving as team captain in 2002 and 2006 and was the first American player to be selected to the FIFA All World Cup team for his performances during the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea.  He also represented the US in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
