East Side Students Making Their Mark as Volunteers

Ironbound-based program mentors high school youth during improvement projects

The Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID) and East Side High School have launched a community service partnership which will provide East Side  students the opportunity to participate in “Learn and Serve” projects and meet their senior year community service internship requirement. Through the partnership, students will work under the guidance of the IBID’s professional staff and other local partners including the Newark Police Department, Greater Newark Conservancy, local business owners and neighborhood watch groups.

The program, which started earlier this month with students participating in a spring planting in the Ironbound’s Peter Francisco Park, will continue throughout the spring and will resume in the fall with the start of the new school year. The goal of the next “Learn and Serve” project will be to engage students with business owners and residents in a community block watch program.

“As the community relations specialist I am constantly looking for unique and valuable opportunities that instill life lessons for our students,” said East Side High School’s Keith D. Veltre. “The IBID has assisted in creating community service projects for our students that are educational but also incorporate life skills that they can take with them after they graduate. The IBID in partnership with East Side High School promotes the importance of giving back, and the initiatives provide each child who participates with a sense of pride because the work is done in their community, the Ironbound.”
