Groups Take on Ironbound Grafitti

Cleanup sponsored neighborhood's business improvement district.

If you’ve been noticing a littel less grafitti in the Ironbound lately, that’s no accident.

Members of various organizations, including the Ironbound Business Improvement District and the Ironbound Neighborhood Crime Watch, have been picking up trash and painting over graffiti at underpasses along New Jersey Railroad Avenue, from South Street to Penn Station.

“We need to take back the tunnels and keep them clean, safe and welcoming for Ironbound residents and visitors,” said Seth A. Grossman, the IBID’s Executive Director. “The underpasses are key connectors between the Ironbound, the Prudential Center and Newark’s downtown and we believe they must be a priority.”

IBID Operations Coordinator Chris Bernardo organized the effort, providing IBID supplied brooms, brushes, paint and more to help send a clear message to graffiti vandals that as a community the Ironbound won't stand by as they deface local streets.

Councilman Augusto Amador, who joined the volunteers to paint over graffiti at several underpass locations, stated the effort was long overdue.

“We need to recognize the problem and say enough is enough,” he added. “It takes the support of the entire community to make a difference and I commend the volunteers who contributed to this clean-up effort for making a difference in Newark’s Ironbound.”
