A 3-D Movie About Newark Arrives—at Newark Airport

Find out what's happening this week.

It’s a big week for the arts in Brick City. Wednesday marks the prime-time debut of “American Songbook at NJPAC,” a six-part series featuring performances by some of the most prominent musical artists of the stage and screen, including Valerie Simpson, Tom Wopat, Marin Mazzie and Maude Maggart. The performances, taped at the Newark home of one of the state’s premiere arts venues, will be followed by a Q and A.

The first prime-time airing of the six-week series will be at 8 pm Wednesday on NJTV.

Also this week, “New Work: Newark in 3-D,” by Newark-based filmmakers Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno, is being screened at an unlikely venue: two locations at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal B. The unique six-minute film, inspired by the 1920 avant-garde film Manhatta, features 3-D images of Newark taken from unusual vantage points and a soundtrack of spoken-word poetry performed by Newark artists.

Also this week, Patch will be delving into the Uniform Crime Report, a compilation of stats provided to the state Attorney General’s Office and the State Police by law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey. The report, which covers the year 2012, shows a four percent drop in overall crime statewide compared to the previous year, although violent crime in large cities such as Newark and Paterson was still at levels far higher than state and national averages.
