Primary Election, Basketball Tryout, Former NY Knick at Library This Week

Find out what's happening this week in Newark.

Jersey Express, the Newark-based American Basketball Association franchise, is holding open tryouts this Saturday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. at Shabazz High School, 80 Johnson Ave. Feel like you’ve got the chops to play pro ball? Show up and find out!

In more hoops news, New York Knicks legend John Starks will be at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington St., Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to take part in the “Read to Achieve” summer reading program. Starks will read aloud to some of the young participants.

Also on Tuesday, the state of New Jersey comes a step closer to learning who its next U.S. senator will be. Polls open that day for a primary to determine who will succeed Democrat Frank Lautenberg, who died in early June. Running are two Republicans and four Democrats, including -- in case you haven’t heard already -- Newark’s mayor Cory Booker.
