ART = AMMO Artists/Activists Against Gun Violence, a coalition of concerned people throughout Newark, is holding a flash mob to call attention to the scourge of gun violence. The “art-meets-flash mob” performance, which will take place on May 19 at 2pm in Washington Park, Broad Street and Washinhgton Place, will create a visual reflection of the destruction caused by gun violence. A rehearsal has been scheduled for 1 pm. “Artists have a responsibility to create work that elicits a response. Artists have the power to initiate empathy and introspection – a first step toward changing attitudes,” said Lorin Latarro, a Broadway performer and choreographer, who is the founder of the concept. Aircraft landing gear failed to deploy
Passengers on a flight touching down at Newark Liberty International Airport early Saturday had a bumpy ride after a problem with the plane’s landing gear forced the pilot to make a “belly” landing. An official with US Airways told the Associated Press none of the 34 passengers and crew were hurt when the turboprop craft, which was arriving from Philadelphia, made the unusual landing at 1 am. The plane circled Newark Liberty several times while the crew unsuccessfully attempted to deploy the landing gear before opting for the belly landing. The incident is being reviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board, the AP also reported.

On the flip side, analysis by the Marchex Institute found that Washington, Massachusetts and Arizona topped the list of state residents least likely to lose their cool. Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries. Kamara lied about car theft, housing arrangements to reap more than $70K
A former Newark police officer admitted Friday he scammed his automobile insurance carrier out of more than $10,000 -- the second time this month the officer pleaded guilty in a fraud case. State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said Suliaman Kamara, 31, was a member of the force Feb. 23, 2009, when he called Newark police and reported his 2003 GMC Yukon had been stolen. His insurance carrier, Liberty Mutual, reimbursed him for the truck, its contents and a rental vehicle. Kamara’s scheme unravalled when the State Police found the truck parked in front of his home last March and obtained a search warrant. The car had a license plate from another vehicle. Jets running back Mike Goodson was sent to a Morris County jail following his arrest on drug and weapons charges in Denville Friday. Goodson, 25, was the passenger in a GMC Yukon stopped in the left center lane of I-80 West when a tow truck came upon them and called 911 early Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The tow truck driver reportedly was concerned about the intoxicated condition in which he found Goodson and the driver of the Yukon. Goodson was transported to Saint Claire’s Hospital in nearby Boonton and eventually charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun, and possession of a hollow-point bullet, according to ESPN. Newark teen arrested after allegedly firing shots at two people across from sheriff's headquarters Thursday
A 17-year-old city youth is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot at two people near a landmark Newark church Thursday afternoon, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said. Shortly after 2 pm the teen, whose name was not released, fired two shots at an 18-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman as he rode his bike on Victoria Avenue near the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Fontoura said. The two people were unhurt. Sheriff’s officers in the agency’s patrol division headquarters across the street from the church saw the shooting and ran after the youth, who stashed his gun into an air conditioning vent at 66 Summer Ave. during the chase.
