Parents Fighting School Closure and a Decision Expected on Controversial Bridge Plan

On Patch this week, we’ll be writing about parents fighting to keep a small local grade school open after it has been slated for closure by the Newark Public School district. The proposed closure comes a year after Superintendent Cami Anderson, in a controversial move, called for the closure of seven district schools due to a combination of underperformance and low enrollment. Also this week we’ll meet a local artist whose work has been on display at Vonda’s Kitchen, an eatery that also serves as an exhibition space for painters and sculptors. Annual Ironbound celebration held Saturday

After being delayed by a week due to a rainy forecaast, the Riverbank Festival at Riverbank Park was held this past Saturday, drawing hundreds to the Ironbound park located on Somme Street. Arts and crafts for children, musical performances by city students and ethnic bands and a selection of tasty treats were among the big draws during Saturday's fete.

Section of Mulberry to be Closed for Graduations This Week

Area near Prudential Center affected Monday, Wednesday and Friday

The city of Newark has announced that Mulberry Street between Edison Place and Lafayette Street will be closed on the following dates and times: Monday, May 20, from 7 to 11 am; Wednesday, May 22, from 7 to 11 am; and Friday, May 24, from 7 to 11 am. The closures are in place to accommodate three graduation ceremonies being held at the Prudential Center: New Jersey Institute of Technology on Monday, May 22; Essex County College on Wednesday, May 22; and Seton Hall Law School on Friday, May 24. Motorists are urged to take alternate routes and allow additional time to reach their destinations while these closures are in effect.

Newark Tech Girls Track Honored for Standout Season

School notches first-ever national victories

During a recent meeting the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Newark Tech Girls Winter Track Team for winning the 2013 Group 1 Relays State Championship.  The board’s commendation was sponsored by acclamation and presented to the team by Freeholder President Blonnie Watson of Newark and Freeholders Carol Clark of East Orange, Gerald Owens of South Orange and Leonard Luciano of West Caldwell.   The Newark Tech Girls Winter Track Team, the Lady Terriers, won the 2013 New Jersey Group I State Relays Championship, the first in school history, which was held on Jan. 10-13 in Toms River.  The team competition included the following events: 4x200 Meter Relay, 4x400 Meter Relay, 4x800 Meter Relay, Sprint Medley 2-2-4-8, 4x55 …

A former Newark police officer pleaded guilty to fraud for falsely reporting his SUV stolen. Earlier this month, he also admitted he and his wife illegally obtained $60,000 in rental assistance.  A quick-thinking five-year-old telephoned for help after his father suffered a stroke while driving. A baby girl was pronounced dead after being found in a bathtub filled with about an inch of water at her foster home. The death appeared accidental, authorities said. A Weequahic High School student was killed just blocks from the school in what officials said appeared to be a “targeted” shooting. Louise A. Flash Mob in Newark Sunday is Protest Against Gun Violence

ART = AMMO Artists/Activists Against Gun Violence, a coalition of concerned people throughout Newark, is holding a flash mob to call attention to the scourge of gun violence. The “art-meets-flash mob” performance, which will take place on May 19 at 2pm in Washington Park, Broad Street and Washinhgton Place, will create a visual reflection of the destruction caused by gun violence. A rehearsal has been scheduled for 1 pm. “Artists have a responsibility to create work that elicits a response. Artists have the power to initiate empathy and introspection – a first step toward changing attitudes,” said Lorin Latarro, a Broadway performer and choreographer, who is the founder of the concept. No One Hurt After Rough Landing at Newark Liberty Saturday

Aircraft landing gear failed to deploy

Passengers on a flight touching down at Newark Liberty International Airport early Saturday had a bumpy ride after a problem with the plane’s landing gear forced the pilot to make a “belly” landing. An official with US Airways told the Associated Press none of the 34 passengers and crew were hurt when the turboprop craft, which was arriving from Philadelphia, made the unusual landing at 1 am. The plane circled Newark Liberty several times while the crew unsuccessfully attempted to deploy the landing gear before opting for the belly landing. The incident is being reviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board, the AP also reported.

New Jersey Ranks Third in %&!#@ing Survey

Swearing study ranked the most and least courteous states in the country.

Third place? We couldn’t do better than #&@$ing third place? New Jersey residents were beaten out by Ohio and Maryland in a survey ranking individuals most likely to drop swear words on a complete stranger during a phone conversation. On the flip side, analysis by the Marchex Institute found that Washington, Massachusetts and Arizona topped the list of state residents least likely to lose their cool. Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries. The mobile advertising company also ranked the most courteous states: South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland. And the least courteous states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Indiana.
