After Nearly 70 Years, A Soldier's Dog Tag Comes Home

Newark WWII veteran receives an honor and a surprising memento of his long-ago service

When Anne-Marie Crespo began puttering in her garden in Istres, France one day 12 years ago, she was about to discover a link to her nation’s wartime past -- and to a 20-year-old soldier from North Carolina who had been tasked with one of the military’s most sacred yet emotionally wrenching assignments. Crespo, while digging beneath an olive tree at her home near the Mediterranean port city of Marseilles, uncovered a World War II-era dog tag belonging to Willie Wilkins, who had accidentally dropped in 1944. On Wednesday, with the help of French citizens, the US Department of Veterans Affairs and a Newark-based organization that aids military veterans, soldier and tag were reunited. Wilkins also received the State of New Jersey's …

This is great and shows why Europeans have a different opinion of our African American soldiers, than the average American of European decent. This story is reminds me of the time that I lived in Germany. While dating a German Fraulein, I was blessed to speak with her grandmother, who lived during Hitler's reign and fall. When I and her granddaughter decided to marry, her grandmother told me that…   more ›

Raymond Boulevard Losing a Car Lane in East Ward

Narrower motorway meant to ease pedestrian, bicyclists' access to riverfront parks

A section of Raymond Boulevard has lost a motor-vehicle lane to make way for a new bikeway, city officials said. The major east-west thoroughfare has been reduced from three car lanes to two between Chapel and Somme streets in the East Ward effective Friday. Work on the roadway is expected to be completed by Monday, the city’s engineering department said. The lane will be converted to bicycle access only and is intended to make it easier for non-motorists to get to parks along the Passaic River, including City Riverfront Park and Essex County Riverfront Park. The change resulted from a state Department of Transportation study aiming to improve quality of life and park access along Raymond Boulevard, a high-traffic area where motorists …

With our partners, like the university, we’re trying to rebuild the urban forest,” said Kim Green of the city’s Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services. Newark Water Agency to be Disbanded

Control of water utility functions being brought back in-house by May

NJ.com reported Tuesday the agency that manages tens of thousands of acres of Newark watershed property will be disbanded in May, when its functions will be transferred to the city. The Newark Watershed Conservation Development Corporation, which runs a water system serving a half-million customers in the city and surrounding towns, had long been plagued by reports of mismanagement and excessive spending. Since last year, members of the Newark Municipal Council have called for an investigation of the agency. Among the complaints lodged against the watershed corporation was that it functioned as the city’s de facto water utility, in violation of municipal statutes stating the water system must be run by an official appointed by the elected …
