Zuckerberg Raising Money for Christie

Facebook founder, Newark schools benefactor back in Jersey mix

NEWARK, NJ -- Say what you will about Mark Zuckerberg, but the youthful Facebook billionaire certainly seems to have a soft spot for the Garden State.  Media outlets reported Thursday that Zuckerberg and his wife will hold a fundraiser for Gov. Chris Christie at their California home Feb. 13. The tough-talking Republican governor, who angered many in his party by praising President Obama’s response to Hurricane Sandy, has already announced his intention to seek reelection in 2013. Another Zuckerberg pal, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, last year announced he would not be seeking the seat, but plans instead to run for US Senate. Zuckerberg donated $100 million to the city’s schools in 2010 after he and Booker bonded at a West Coast conference.  …

Booker Releases Emails On $100 Million Donation to Newark Schools

Newark officials released 36 emails about the $100 million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made in 2010 to city schools.

After Newark officials were order to release emails about the $100-million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made to the city’s schools in 2010, they showed it never happened. The emails revealed the donation was dismissed by one of Mayor Cory Booker's top aides as too small, according to NJ.com. However the emails also showed Newark philanthropist Ray Chambers was in favor of it. “It is unfortunate that it took a lawsuit and ruling from the judge to force the City of Newark to turn over public documents," the American Civil Liberties Union Legal Director, Ed Barocas, said. "We and our clients will now review the documents. And if there are no bombshells in these emails, the public has a right to ask why the city was so adamant in …

I have first hand experience with a hand full of so called "good" nursing homes. They offer low pay to workers and most of these so called nurses aids could care less about the elderly and do as little as possible on the job. It's almost impossible to find one (NA) born in the USA because of low wages and type of work at most nursing homes. Nursing home owners are in it for the money, its just …   more ›

Newark Halfway to Matching $100M Facebook Donation

City has invested $16 million of $50 million raised through individual donors

Two years after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a $100 million donation to support Newark's struggling schools, the city is at the halfway mark of matching that cash. About $50 million has been raised so far by Foundation for Newark's Future, the nonprofit organization tasked with managing the money. Of that total, a bulk of which has come from hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who reportedly gave $25 million through his philanthropic Pershing Square Foundation, and venture capitalist John Doerr, who donated $10 million, about $16 million has been invested. (See list below.) The foundation must match the $100 million donation through outside donors in order to access the money. "We're using our revenue to be much more thoughtful …

POLL: Is Facebook Really Worth All Those Billions?

It became a publicly-traded company this week and is making billions for its shareholders.

From its humble beginnings as an idea in a Harvard dorm room, to a social media site with an estimated 900 million users worldwide - Facebook has become a huge part of our popular culture. Privately held since 2004, Facebook became a publicly-traded company this week. That means all of its shares will be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange and sold to the public, though some investors criticized that it was hard to get their hands on the stock. Once trading began, Facebook sold 421 million shares at $38 each and raised an estimated $16 billion in one day, setting records for valuation and volume of first-day trading. Friday's trading set a record for the number of shares sold, 567 million. The company's total valuation is now estimated at $…

Can an Employer Force You to Reveal Your Facebook Password?

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.

Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett refused and left the interview, according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

Get Fit, Get Cash

New Program Rewards Those Who Meet Exercise Goals

It’s easier to stick to an exercise regimen with a group -- even a virtual one. That’s the theory behind the “Cory Booker Challenge,” a wellness program using social media and monetary prizes to encourage Newarkers to get healthy by engaging in regular physical activity. Newark's mayor officially launched the program yesterday at the Newark Museum, which is currently hosting an interactive exhibit called “Generation Fit” where visitors can learn their standing heart-rate, BMI ratio, as well as a wealth of information about nutrition (including tidbits like this one: appetite can be affected by the color contrast between your meal and your plate). Obesity is “dramatically undermining our quality of life, dramatically undermining our ability…
