Ferry 99 sells one of two $1 million Powerball tickets
Someone is $1 million richer after purchasing a winning Powerball lottery ticket from a Newark store. The winning ticket, which has not yet been claimed, was purchased from Ferry 99, a shop in the city's East Ward, lottery officials announced Monday. There was no jackpot winner of the Powerball game, which held its drawing on Saturday, but another $1 million winning Powerball ticket was sold in Cape May County. Four other $10,000 tickets were sold in New Jersey. The winning numbers for the Saturday drawing were: 22, 32, 37, 44 and 50. The red powerball number was 34. The two $1 million winners matched all five numbers to collect the second-place prize. "I go with my sisters to Florida each year so I guess I’ll be treating them this year," …

Fans in Newark's Ironbound party it up after game
Despite a heartbreaking loss for Portugal, Spain's penalty shootout victory Wednesday in the Euro 2012 semifinals was still a cause for celebration in Newark's Ironbound community. Fans from both sides of the Peninsular War poured onto Ferry Street shortly after Spain ousted Portugal, 4-2, in penalty kicks following 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime. And, though it was a community divided going into Wednesday's game, huge Spain and Portugal flags waved in unison during a blowout bash at Iberia. "It feels really great to see Spain win because I'm of Puerto Rican descent," said Will Caballero, who caught the game at Manu's Tapas Bar and Sushi Lounge. Spain, the reigning World Cup and Euro champs, are vying to become the …
Locals weigh in on which team they think will advance to finals
All eyes in the Ironbound will be glued to the boob tube Wednesday afternoon for the European Championship semifinals, an Iberian Peninsula showdown close to the hearts of many Newarkers. But while some residents of the mostly Spanish and Portuguese community are quick to voice their favorite team, predicting a clear-cut winner of the much-hyped matchup proved harder to choose. "I think it's 50-50, it can go either way," said Ironbound resident Joana Gouveia, who is rooting for Portugal. "They're both good." While Tony, a Newark resident for 20 years who did not want to give his last name, had no qualms about predicting Portugal would take the semis 4-0, he said the team's prospective win depends on coaching. "If they play an offensive …

Robert Menendez (D-NJ), state Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29), Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura and Newark city councilmembers, including East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, whose office co-sponsored this year's festival with União de Clubes Luso-Americanos de NJ (UCLANJ). Three-day festival to shed image of rowdy, booze-filled event with good, clean fun
The Portugal Day Festival in Newark is getting back to its roots this year, according to organizers who promise gone are the days of the wild booze-fest for which it's been previously known. The world-renowned festival, which kicks off today on Ferry Street in the city's Ironbound, has undergone a metamorphosis - and change in organizers - and is now spread across a three-day family friendly celebration filled with cultural music, food and kids activities. The fest runs from noon until 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. "We're trying to change the way people perceive the whole affair," said Fernando Grilo, president of União de Clubes Luso-Americanos de NJ (UCLANJ). Founded in 1980 by Bernardino Coutinho, and long-organized by his …
