25-year-old Newark man slain Friday night; no suspect or motive determined, cops report.
Two men were shot on Bloomfield Avenue Friday night, with one dying as a result a short time later at University Hospital, according to authorities. Just after 10 p.m. shots rang out at 208 Bloomfield Avenue, the location of Avenue Liquors, striking Felix Hernandez, 25, of Newark and another man who police would not identify, Ambrose said. Both men were transported to University Hospital where Hernandez was pronounced dead, Ambrose said. The other victim is in stable condition. There are no suspects or motive yet, Ambrose said, and the Essex County Homicide Task Force and Newark Police are actively investigating. A Newark man was arrested Saturday in connection with an early morning shooting that left a 19-year-old with non-life threatening injuries, according to authorities. Detectives from the Major Crimes Section apprehended James Little, 20, of Newark, Saturday, hours after the shooting. The investigation led authorities to identify Little as the alleged suspect in the shooting of a 19-year-old man at about 1:50 a.m. Saturday on the 200 block of South 7th Street. The 19-year-old suffered a non-life threatening gun shot wound, authorities said. Detectives recovered a loaded Colt .38 Special Revolver at the scene of the incident. Newark Police are searching for a man who robbed a pharmacy on Mt. Prospect Avenue Saturday morning.
Police are searching for a man who claimed to be a police officer and robbed a pharmacy of money and drugs Saturday morning, according to Newark Police Det. Todd McClendon. The man first entered Giannotto's Pharmacy at 195 First St. shortly before 11 a.m. and claimed to be a police officer installing surveillance cameras, according to McClendon. The man asked to enter the rear of the store, but fled when a pharmacy employee went to get a manager. A short time later, the same man went to Medcare Family Pharmacy at 644 Mt. Prospect Ave. and committed an armed robbery, according to McClendon. The man made off with an undetermined amount of cash and a variety of drugs. No injuries were reported from either incident. A homeless Newark man was charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found last Friday in the Passaic River, authorities said. Newark police found the body of Therese Diggins, 58, also of Newark, last week in the water near 996 Route 21, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Her death had been ruled a homicide, following an autopsy that showed the cause of death was a stab wound to the neck and blunt force trauma to the head. Joseph Melillo, 44, was arrested and charged with murder by detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. Diggins and Melillo were living in Newark but were homeless at the time, authorities said. The relationship between the two is unclear. Bail was set at $1 …

Newark Police are investigating the death of a 59-year-old homeless man whose body was found Saturday on Herbert Place, a department spokesman said. According to preliminary reports, an unidentified passerby walked into the 2nd police precinct to report the body around 4 p.m., Detective Todd McClendon said. There were no "obvious signs of trauma" or foul play, and detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death, according to McClendon. The man's name was being withheld, pending notification of next of kin. Additional details were not immediately released.

Newark police was involved in two shootings on Saturday morning, one ending in the arrest of three alleged car jackers. Around 10:30 a.m., Newark police was involved in a non-fatal shooting at Elizabeth and Meeker Avenues following a pursuit of three alleged carjackers, McClendon said. According to preliminary accounts, McClendon said, police came across a 2008 Black Mercedes Benz at the intersection of 16th Avenue S. 10th Street that had been carjacked earlier by three unidentified suspects. Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old male on Garside Street Saturday night, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Juan Cabrera, of Newark, was pronounced dead at University Hospital shortly before midnight, the prosecutor's office said. The prosecutor's office said the Newark Police responded to the shots reported on the 200 block of Garside Street at about 10:25 p.m Saturday. A 20-year-old East Orange man has been arrested after allegedly leading police on a car chase that left four people injured in Newark Thursday afternoon. Lamar Hill is accused of speeding away in a car, reported stolen Aug. 29, when East Orange police tried to make a motor vehicle stop at around 1:50 p.m. Thursday, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced. Hill then crashed the stolen car in Newark, at the intersection of Roseville and 7th avenues, hitting a car belonging to a Reading, Pa. man and several parked cars. "It appears at this junction in the investigation that [Calvin] Johnson was targeted. It also appears at this time that robbery was not the motive.
