Officers hurt during incident early Tuesday morning.
Two Newark police officers were briefly hospitalized Tuesday after helping subdue a violent occupant who fled a vehicle that had been stopped, department spokesman Sgt. Ron Glover said. Police stopped a car that had been reported carjacked around 4 a.m. at 644 Martin Luther King Blvd. As police questioned the occupants, one of them, Ryan Nimmons, a 25-year-old city man who was in the back seat, allegedly attempted to hide something in the waistband of his pants. When police ordered him from the vehicle, Nimmons ran away, eventually being captured after a brief foot chase, Glover said. Kamara lied about car theft, housing arrangements to reap more than $70K
A former Newark police officer admitted Friday he scammed his automobile insurance carrier out of more than $10,000 -- the second time this month the officer pleaded guilty in a fraud case. State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said Suliaman Kamara, 31, was a member of the force Feb. 23, 2009, when he called Newark police and reported his 2003 GMC Yukon had been stolen. His insurance carrier, Liberty Mutual, reimbursed him for the truck, its contents and a rental vehicle. Kamara’s scheme unravalled when the State Police found the truck parked in front of his home last March and obtained a search warrant. The car had a license plate from another vehicle. In an unrelated case, Kamara admitted in federal court May 8 that he and his wife …

Department holds annual awards and promotional ceremony Thursday.
They rushed into burning buildings to save entire families, chased down armed robbers and rescued several from the floods of last year’s Hurricane Sandy. They are some of the dozens of police officers honored Thursday for actions above the normal call of duty during 2012. “I am enormously honored to be here to recognize my colleagues on the police department that is one of the most important partners with my office,” said US Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman, one of the keynote speakers at Thursday’s city hall ceremony. Fishman spoke for many when he referred to the sacrifices both great and small law enforcement officers are called upon to make every day, from a child’s missed softball game to “the ultimate sacrifice.” Fishman also …

A baby girl died Wednesday morning after possibly drowning in a bathtub at her Newark foster home, Nj.com reported. Police received a 9-1-1 call shortly before 10 am. Kaniiyah was pronounced dead at Clara Maass Medical Center at 10:23 am, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Katherine Carter told Nj.com. An autopsy is being performed to determine a precise cause of death, Carter also said Wednesday. The state Department of Children and Families last sent a caseworker to the home May 2 and is conducting an investigation. The foster parent, who was also caring…
Youth had just signed himself out of school
Story updated 10 pm May 15 An 18-year-old Weequahic High School student was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon minutes after leaving school grounds, officials said. Speaking at a press conference regarding a school lockdown the same day, Mayor Cory Booker said the youth signed himself out of school around 1:52 pm. The victim was later identified as Paul Hudson of Newark, said Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Unarmed men, youth run into school for shelter, triggering alert
Officials said students were never in danger after three people rushed into a grade school Wednesday afternoon, triggering a lockdown that sent a wave of panic among parents and caregivers still anxious in the wake of the Newtown school shootings late last year. “We will always be overly cautious, proactive and vigilant when it comes to the safety of our kids,” Mayor Cory Booker said during a press conference with police and school officials at police headquarters on Clinton Avenue. Two men and a juvenile ran into the Louise A. Spencer School on Muhammad Ali Avenue around 2:35 pm, while classes were still in session. The door had been opened by a substitute teacher. The three then headed straight for the principal’s office, Booker said. …
Several were arrested after police broke up weapons sale at Newark apartment last year
A South Carolina man who was among more than a dozen people arrested after Newark police disrupted an illegal arms market last year was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in jail, US Attorney Paul Fishman announced. County's 200 Club bestows Valor Awards last week
The 200 Club of Essex County, an organization that raises funds for the families of first-responders killed in the line of duty, on May 9 presented firefighters, police officers and other public workers with awards for acts of exemplary courage performed during 2012. The city of Newark was well represented. Several firefighters and police were honored collectively for their efforts during Hurricane Sandy, when much of the East Ward was flooded by the Passaic River while other emergencies -- from fires caused by downed transformers to people trapped in elevators -- were occurring in every corner of the darkened city. Also honored was a Newark police officer who continued to chase down a fleeing suspect even after his patrol car was totalled…
