An employee of Newark Liberty International Airport was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at Broad and Camp streets. A city man was charged with sexually assaulting the underage nieces of his girlfriend. Police had begun to investigate after receiving a complaint from a parent. PSE&G issued a public warning to customers about a payment scam in which callers pretending to be with the utility threaten to shut off the victims’ power unless a payment is made immediately. The scammers appeared to be targeting Hispanic residents. A 29-year-old Irvington man was shot and killed on Renner Avenue. A second man was wounded in the attack. A jury convicted an 11-year …

Neighbors fear health risks, but PSE&G says switching facility is safe -- and necessary
About 70 people attended a public information session at the 13th Avenue School Monday to hear presentations on a plan to build an electrical switching station in the area, a plan that has raised health and other concerns among residents of the densely populated West Ward neighborhood where it would be built. “PSE&G should be a good neighbor, and to be a good neighbor you should be doing things environmentally correct,” said Kim Gaddy of the city’s environmental commission. Representatives of PSE&G, however, insist the project presents no long term dangers and is necessary to ensure Newark has an adequate electrical supply, especially during natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy, which initially left 95 percent of the city in the dark. …

Thursday, February 14
Scammers targeting primarily Hispanic residents are posing as employees of PSE&G and bilking victims of substantial amounts of money, the utility said in a statement. The fraudsters contact PSE&G customers to warn them their utilities will be shut off that day unless a payment is made using a prepaid debit card. The call is sometimes pre-recorded. The victims are then instructed to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPack, use cash to put money on the card, and then provide the card number to the person who called them. Once the scammers have the card information, they then transfer the funds. “We take very seriously any attempt to defraud our customers,” said Joseph A. Forline, vice president of customer solutions for PSE&G. “We are working …

No significant power outages have been reported as of noon Friday, but storm expected to last into early morning Saturday.
No significant power outages have been reported in Essex County a few hours into Friday's Winter Storm, but PSE&G is ready to respond to what could be widespread outages throughout its service area, the utility said in advance of the Nor'easter. Contractors, including tree crews, are poised and ready and additional supplies, such as poles, transformer and other equipment, are on hand, PSE&G said. The Nor’easter could dump more than a foot of snow and bring heavy winds to Essex County, where widespread, long-term outages caused by Superstorm Sandy are still fresh on many residents’ minds. Essex County has declared a state of emergency, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management. No parking will be allowed on country roads …

Mayor Cory Booker challenges PSEG's estimate that power has been restored to about 65 percent of customers in Newark
UPDATE, 7 pm Wednesday, Oct. 31 Parts of Newark are still without power Wednesday, including large parts of the North Ward, despite PSEG estimates that 65 percent of the city is back up. PSEG officials later clarified those comments, saying its original percentage estimates referred to meters and not actual customers. City officials now believe about 60 percent of the city was without power as of 2:30 pm Wednesday, and that it may take up to two or three days to restore. During a conference call with reporters around 5 pm Wednesday, PSEG president Ralph Larossa said the company is working on the Essex switching station, infrastructure wiped out by a tidal surge during the hurricane. That station alone serves tens of thousands of customers…
Electric Company official says Hurricane Sandy 'similar but a much more serious storm than Irene.'
Nearly 150,000 PSE&G customers in Essex County are still without power Wednesday morning after what officials called a "painstaking" restoration process. Power has been restored to large parts of Newark, including Newark International Liberty Airport, Elizabeth and parts of Jersey City. Newark likely experienced the brunt of outages, with 95 percent of the city dark Tuesday. That number has dropped to 35 percent, with an assessment of substations continuing Wednesday. "We have an enormous amount of work ahead of us," said Ralph Izzo, chairman and chief executive officer of PSE&G. Hurricane Sandy, said another PSE&G official, was "similar but a much more serious storm than Irene." There were more than 255,000 Essex County PSE&G customers…

The deceit of stating it would be a community meeting is disrespectful. The other switching stations are in industrial areas, not residential. How do they know about the impact on the residents of the community if there was no study.   more ›
