Newarker named salutatorian of the Class of 2013
Newarkers were among the most accomplished of the more the 1,400 students to receive diplomas Wednesday during Essex County College’s commencement ceremony. The school’s 44th annual commencement was held at the Prudential Center. Yafrainy Familia, who is graduating with a 3.98 average and an associate in science in social sciences, was the class salutatorian and a member Phi Theta Kappa. The Newark resident was awarded the 2012-2013 Distinguished Chapter Member Award for PTK’s Middle States Region, was president of the college’s Dominican Student Association and plans to transfer to Rutgers, Smith College or Amherst College this fall. Area near Prudential Center affected Monday, Wednesday and Friday
The city of Newark has announced that Mulberry Street between Edison Place and Lafayette Street will be closed on the following dates and times: Monday, May 20, from 7 to 11 am; Wednesday, May 22, from 7 to 11 am; and Friday, May 24, from 7 to 11 am. The closures are in place to accommodate three graduation ceremonies being held at the Prudential Center: New Jersey Institute of Technology on Monday, May 22; Essex County College on Wednesday, May 22; and Seton Hall Law School on Friday, May 24. Motorists are urged to take alternate routes and allow additional time to reach their destinations while these closures are in effect.

Daneyko, Driver, Leetch, Duguay among those scheduled to play
Tickets went on sale Tuesday for a charity hockey game to the Prudential Center in Newark pitting some of the greatest players from North America and Russia. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. The game will be held April 13 at 1 pm. 78th annual celebration steps off March 15
St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc., organizers of the oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the state, announced that Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Esq. as its Grand Marshal and Eileen P. Gilleece, Detective Sergeant First Class with the New Jersey State Police, as Deputy Grand Marshal in its 78th Year. In addition, Bloomfield Councilwoman-at-Large Peggy O'Boyle, a member of the Newark Parade Committee, will help lead the festivities. The parade will be held on Friday afternoon, March 15 with grandstand ceremonies beginning at 12 p.m. and the official parade kick-off at 1 pm. Performers appear at city hall, Beth Israel this week
Performers from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus joined staff from Newark Beth Israel Children’s Hospital and Jeff Vanderbeek, chairman of Devils Arena Entertainment, at the unveiling of the hospital’s newly renovated waiting room at the hospital’s pediatric center Feb. 27. The waiting room’s new decor has a circus theme inspired by the Ringling Bros. 2013 show, “Built to Amaze.” On Thursday, circus performers also put on a show at Newark City Hall to mark this year’s return of Ringling Bros. to Newark. Newark officials Monday announced the city and New Jersey Devils leadership have reached a revenue-sharing deal surrounding the five-year-old Prudential Center arena that, if approved by the city council, could finally end litigation, according to an NJ.com report. “It is a significant achievement that is truly a win-win for all parties involved,” according to a joint statement from the city, the Devils and the Newark Housing Authority, which served as the arena developer, the report said. “We can now move forward together, continuing to build on the successes of the last five years, which will make the Rock and the rapidly growing arena district an even greater economic engine for Newark.” According to the report, terms of the agreement …

Recording artist Bruno Mars begins his “Moonshine Jungle World Tour” June 22. The tour includes a stop at the Prudential Center in Newark July 1. Prudential Center hosting popular game week event
The 2014 NFL Super Bowl is coming to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. But Brick City will be sharing a bit of the spotlight for the nation’s premiere sporting event too. On Jan. 28, 2014, the Prudential Center will host the game’s Media Day, the kickoff for the week of events leading up to the big game.
