School placed first among 1,500 institutions for affordability
Technology has helped Essex County College achieve the number one ranking for the affordability of its textbooks, according to a recent survey of colleges and universities across the United States. “We’ve been offering e-books since the fall 2012 semester,” said Marva Rudder, director of the college’s bookstore. The e-books are available for classes offered every semester and make up about 10 percent of all books sold at ECC, Rudder also said. The study, released in March by Akademos, ranked the affordability of texts sold at 1,500 schools, including Rutgers-Newark, which landed at 424 on the list. Another Newark school, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, was not ranked. It’s not uncommon for college students to pay a few hundred …

Brick City became a little more green Thursday, when the city government partnered with Rutgers-Newark, individual volunteers and other groups to plant 28 trees at the campus’s Samuels Plaza in celebration of Arbor Day. New Jersey's Arbor Day, which is celebrated on different days in different states, is observed on the last Friday in April. “What happened with Hurricane Sandy really hurt our urban forest. With our partners, like the university, we’re trying to rebuild the urban forest,” said Kim Green of the city’s Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services. Green said the city plants hundreds of trees a year throughout Newark, sometimes working in concert with the New Jersey Tree Foundation, the main partner in Thursday’s …

For many, a troubled past opens to a brighter future following graduation yesterday
Environmental remediation and personal rehabilitation went hand-in-hand last night, when nearly a dozen men and women graduated from a special training program in lead abatement, asbestos removal, hazardous-waste management and other “green jobs” skills. Many of last night’s graduates have served time in prison and regard the Metro Newark Brownfields Careers Training Program as the break they needed to begin new, productive lives. “This gives people a chance to give back to the community and be productive where they live,” said John Martin, a spokesman for the US Environmental Protection Agency, which helped fund the careers training program. The program was run in Newark by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, a group working to …
