James Caldwell High School freshman Dean Caravela surpasses father's record set in 1986, as well as 2004 school record.
Breaking a school record is one way to make your parents proud. But what happens when that record was formerly held by your dad? James Caldwell High School wrestler Dean Caravela achieved 35 wins his freshman year, the most in a single season in the program’s history. It’s a record his father Tom Caravela set in 1986, when he went 29-3 as a senior grappler with the Chiefs. The record was challenged by Blake Maffei, Mike Kwapniewski and Steve Martell, the latter who went 33-0 in his 2004 state championship season. Asked last week if he feels badly about surpassing his dad’s record, the 14-year-old with dark cropped hair and a big smile which reveals his braces, shook his head, looked at his father and said, “No.” Tom responded, “I’ll tell …

Locals weigh in on which team they think will advance to finals
All eyes in the Ironbound will be glued to the boob tube Wednesday afternoon for the European Championship semifinals, an Iberian Peninsula showdown close to the hearts of many Newarkers. But while some residents of the mostly Spanish and Portuguese community are quick to voice their favorite team, predicting a clear-cut winner of the much-hyped matchup proved harder to choose. "I think it's 50-50, it can go either way," said Ironbound resident Joana Gouveia, who is rooting for Portugal. "They're both good." While Tony, a Newark resident for 20 years who did not want to give his last name, had no qualms about predicting Portugal would take the semis 4-0, he said the team's prospective win depends on coaching. "If they play an offensive …

Community-focused Bears start season Thursday night against Worcester Tornadoes
The Newark Bears had one final tune-up Wednesday afternoon before Opening Day and the start of their 15th season. The opponent however wasn't another team of professionals or a future opponent in the CanAm League the Bears participate in. Instead, it was the baseball team of Newark Tech High School. While it was merely an exhibition, the event was just the latest example of how the Bears are not just trying to be a winning team on the field but a part of the Newark community. "I think it's very important," said new Bears manager Ken Oberkfell about having that relationship with the city. "You want to meet as many people, as many organizations, as many businesses as you can. It promotes the team, it gets people into the ballpark. We're here…

Win marks the fourth top-five finish at world championship
What coach Timothy Carr called an "administrative decision" caused his eighth-grade double-dutch doubles jumpers at BRICK Avon Academy to completely revamp their routine just hours before competing at the 38th Annual American Double Dutch League Worldwide Invitational Tournament. And what could have ruined their hopes of ranking among the world's top teams instead became a show of remarkable resolve, as the double-dutch doubles quartet from Avon placed fifth last Saturday in Sumter, S.C. The foursome of Janiyah Bray, Anirah Davis, Sadiyya Gaddy and Zhanae McCain – doubles includes four jumpers; Bray and McCain were late additions because of the "administrative decision" – helped Avon earn its fourth top-five finish at the world …

I've been a fan since the first day! I was disappointed last night to see that the crowd was sparse at the opening game. It is a fun, inexpensive way to entertain the family. The team really played! They won 9-2 and it looks like a great team. Come on Newark and surrounding areas . . . . . . . . . support your hometown team!!!!!!!   more ›
