Leaf Collection Schedule for All Newark Wards

Pickup begins Monday, Oct. 15 in South, Central and West Wards

Newark's Leaf Recycling Collection program beings today, Monday. Leaf pickups will be made in the South, Central and West Wards on Mondays and Tuesdays between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leaf pickups in the North and East Wards will be on Thursdays and Fridays between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will be no pickups in any ward on holidays. Newark residents age 62 and older, showing proper identification, can receive up to 15 brown paper biodegradable bags free of charge from the city. Newark Teen Indicted in 2011 Murder, Robbery

Darnell Williams, 19, accused of murdering 64-year-old man in robbery last year

A Newark teenager has been indicted in the 2011 murder and robbery of a 64-year-old city man, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has announced. In addition to murder, the eight-count indictment charges Darnell Williams, 19, with two counts of aggravated assault, robbery, terroristic threats, felony murder and weapons offenses in the Nov. 12, 2011 death of Kenneth Kwiakowsky, 64. Kwiakowsky was shot to during a robbery on Chapel Street in Newark's East Ward and died two days later from his injuries. Williams is also accused of threatening a woman and assaulting a man that same evening when he entered an apartment all three were in while attempting to rob them. Bail was set at $500,000 for Williams, who is currently being held at Essex …

It’s the Battle of the Peninsula, and the pubs, lounges and restaurants of the East Ward are ready. Home to thousands of residents of Iberian descent, a number of venues in the Ironbound plan to be showing the European Championship soccer semifinals between Spain and Portugal tomorrow. The game will be broadcast on ESPN at 2:45 pm. The winner of what is expected to be a shootout between two high-powered offenses advances to the European championships. Utility Work will Affect Some East Ward Streets

Underground Repairs Scheduled to be Completed in Mid-June

PSE&G has announced that it will be performing extensive repair work in the East Ward beginning this week. The utility is replacing an underground electric transmission circuit connecting the Federal Square substation and the Frontage Road termination facility. Work along the two-mile circuit is expected to be completed in mid-June. Service will not be affected and no roadways will be closed. The utility said, however, there may be lane closures or detours during the course of the repairs, which will be done round the clock and on weekends during certain phases of the project. Affected areas are: E. Kinney Street between McWhorter and New Jersey Railroad Avenue; and Adams Street between Chestnut and Oliver streets.

Boundaries of Newark's West, East Wards Likely to Shift

Councilman: Redistricting to cause minimal impact for residents

Newark's West Ward likely will expand by several blocks, while the East Ward will contract somewhat as a result of population shifts recorded in the 2010 census, officials said. The West Ward's 2010 census population came in at 51,454, which is 1,202 people short of what election officials are proposing should be the minimum for the size of a ward, according to the Essex County Board of Elections. Meanwhile, the census put the East Ward's population at 58,824, which puts the ward 624 people over the maximum, the records show. Over the coming weeks, a commission composed of four county elections officials and Newark City Clerk Robert Marasco will decide what the new boundaries should be.
