Body of Passaic resident found near light-rail tacks Monday.
Authorities Tuesday released the name of a woman found dead along the city’s light rail line the day before. Anna Ithier, 53, of Passaic, was found by NJ Transit police around 8:20 am between the Park Avenue stop and Bloomfield Station. She had sustained blunt force trauma, said Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The circumstances of her death have yet to be determined but a preliminary investigation reveals that Ithier may have been hit by a train, Carter also said. The death is being investigated by Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with information is being asked to call 1-877-847-7432.

Little girl's death appears accidental, police say
A baby girl died Wednesday morning after possibly drowning in a bathtub at her Newark foster home, Nj.com reported. The death of Kaniiyah Ealey, who was 11 months old, appeared accidental, said Samuel DeMaio, director of the Newark Police Department. The baby was found in an inch of water. Police received a 9-1-1 call shortly before 10 am. Kaniiyah was pronounced dead at Clara Maass Medical Center at 10:23 am, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Katherine Carter told Nj.com. An autopsy is being performed to determine a precise cause of death, Carter also said Wednesday. Daughter witnessed victim's 2010 murder at Newark grocery store
The East Orange man who shot and killed a good samaritan on Christmas Eve nearly two and a half years ago was sentenced Monday to life in prison, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed in a statement. “A life sentence is entirely appropriate given the outrageously horrendous nature of this offense,” said Assistant Prosecutor Kim Acocella who tried the case along with Assistant Prosecutor Harry Moskowitz. On Dec. 24, 2010, Daryl Logan, 47, of Newark, left the grocery store where he worked to break up a fight outside, then was punched to the ground. With the help of four search warrants, officials from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, U.S. Department of Agriculture Inspector General’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations arrested a Somerset County man on alleged money laundering, theft by deception and food stamp fraud charges Tuesday, the acting county prosecutor’s office said. Muhammed Farooq, 49, of Somerset was arrested following an eight-month food stamp fraud investigation involving approximately $5.2 million worth of alleged fraudulent electronic food stamp transactions at four Dollar Stores owned by Farooq, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Victim shot near site of multiple shooting last week
A Newark man was shot and killed Monday afternoon in the same neighborhood where five people were struck by gunfire May 2 ,the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said. Thomas Grant was found around 4 pm on S. 15th Street near Springfield Avenue. He was pronounced dead at UMDNJ about a half-hour later, said Katherine Carter, a prosecutor’s office spokesperson. Grant’s age was not immediately known, Carter said, but he is believed to be about 30 years old. No suspects had been identified and the shooting remains under investigation, Caretr also said.

Adult, youth charged in fatal armed robbery on Bergen Street
A 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy have been charged with murdering a city man during a bodega robbery in March, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office told Nj.com Juwan Brice of Hillside and the boy were arrested March 27 but the arrests weren’t made public until this week, a spokeswoman, Katherine Carter, told Nj.com. Police responded to the Super Variety Dollar Plus Store at 960 Bergen St. March 18 on a report of shots fired. There they found Nyshay Simmons, 21, shot dead and another man who had been seriously wounded. A third victim had left the store and gone to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center before police arrived. The two have been charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, weapons offenses and assault.

Five people, including a 10-year-old, were shot during an impromptu vigil on S. 16th Street. All the victims survived. Two airplanes collided as they were taxiing at Newark Liberty International Airport. The craft sustained significant damage but no one was hurt. A Newark man pleaded guilty to manslaughter and robbery in the 2011 slaying of a young off-duty Newark police officer outside a Paterson strip club. The Newark Police Department purchased about 200 guns during a buyback held last weekend. The buyback was the first in city history to be privately funded. Two Elizabeth men who have several prior felony convictions between them were sentenced Friday after being convicted earlier this year of shooting at police during a pursuit and for possession of an assault weapon, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray announced. Anwar Crockett, 32, was sentenced to 30 years and Ali Ibn Karim, 31, received a sentence of 22 years on charges of eluding, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and weapons offenses. Crockett will be eligible for parole after 22 years and Karim after 19 years. On Sept. 19, 2010, the men led Elizabeth police on a chase into Newark, during which they fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers before they were arrested. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office this weekend has identified a man who was shot and killed in the Central Ward early Friday morning. Tariq Johnson, 30, of Newark, was hit by gunfire aroud 2 am on Morris Avenue near Hartford Street. He was pronounced dead shorty afterwards. The shooting remains under investigation.
